There is a story about the function of large parts of our language, which is, in its broad
outlines, intuitive and straightforward. On this view, much of our verbal activity is
representational. Thus, if you say to me ‘your cat is on the mat’, I know to look on the
mat when trying to find my cat, because what you have said manages to represent my
cat as occupying the mat. Representational theories of meaning take it that this intuitive
story is correct, and attempt to explain, in a rigorous way, how it works. According
to representational theories of meaning, semantic categories, such as truth and reference,
have important explanatory roles to play.
