The man who was driving the cart, cracking his whip over the two horses and whistling cheerfully was Kelat, the carpet-merchant of Isfahan. That morning at cock-crow, when the cloudless blue sky promised yet another hot day, he had told his wife Nomi that he was tired of sitting in his stuffy shop waiting for customers who·never came. They would drive out to the hills where it was cooler.
