This book teaches you how to identify classes of word such as noun, adverb and demonstrative, and it shows you how to work out the structure of a sentence by drawing a tree structure. The book assumes that you start out with no knowledge of grammar or linguistics. Because the book teaches you practical skills, you should try to do the exercises. Some exercises get you to practise the structures learned in the chapters. Many exercises introduce concepts and structures which are not mentioned in the chapter text. You should write down the answers and draw tree structures where possible. An exercise with has answers or suggestions at the end of the book. In this second edition I make explicit use of the verb phrase. Hence tree structures differ from those in the first edition.
