Hausa is spoken by at least 40 million people in northern Nigeria (where it is one of the official languages), several million in Niger, and in a number of other countries in the area. It belongs to the Chadic branch of Afro-Asiatic (Semito-Hamitic) family; indeed for linguists it is the most important member. There are several dialects, of which the main ones are the Kano (Eastern) and the Sokoto (Western); they differ primarily in phonetics.
